BASS cancels WBT 1/4/2010

BASS has canceled its 2010 Bassmaster Women's Tour, effective immediately. A BASS official told BassFan that declining participation was behind the cancellation. The official wouldn't divulge final boat numbers for 2010, but did say: "It's been significantly declining over the past 4 years, and this year was no different, and was down from last year."

When asked if the WBT anglers will be given priority entry into the 2010 Bassmaster Opens, the same official said: "For any who are interested, we'll make every effort to get them into the Opens. Some are already fishing the Opens, like Pam Martin-Wells, who's fishing the Southerns."
Also, BASS will shrink the 2011 Classic field back down to 50 boats, since there will be no berth awarded through the WBT.
The WBT was launched in 2005.
In announcing the cancellation, BASS VP and GM Tom Ricks noted: "This was a very tough decision and one that we didn't take lightly. We made every effort to grow the WBT — even awarding WBT anglers a berth in the Classic — but ultimately it didn't resonate."
