Dog swallows 12 needle sharp fish hooks

Pesky pooch swallows 12 fish hooks E-mail

A greedy pet pooch in County Durham sparked concern among vets after wolfing down one tasty treat too many last week.

Owner Brian Sales may have been left facing the prospect of a claim on his pet insurance, but it could have been far worse for 13-year-old Lurcher Toby, who wolfed down 12 needle-sharp fishing hooks.

The pesky pooch had smelt the bait from Mr Sales' tackle bag and instantly homed in on the food, only to scoff down the hooks at the same time, the Daily Mail reports.

Vets were so concerned by the case that they opened up the surgery after hours to treat him, but Toby's allergy to fish bait worked in his favour as the hooks passed through his system at six times the normal speed - without causing any damage.

Vet Rebecca Bradley said: "Happily all of his vital signs remained completely normal while we observed him and we let him home - we all think he had a very lucky escape."

This comes after one playful Cocker Spaniel left his owner in a pickle in last month after gobbling up her car key after she had dropped it on the floor.
